Snakes & Ladders Guide: Ladders, Snakes, Four Levels and Square Multipliers

Updated 2026-10-30 · MacePlay

Snakes and Ladders is the dice-and-board game many of us grew up with: roll, move, climb the ladders, avoid the snakes. MacePlay turns it into a short single-player game where every square shows a multiplier. You can stop and collect at any time, or keep rolling and push for the finish. This guide covers the board, the four difficulty levels, where the multipliers come from, and a few worked examples.

The basics

In MacePlay, Snakes and Ladders is single-player, with no opponents. Landing on a snake does not slide you back down; it ends the round. That is the biggest difference from the board-game version.

Ladders and the four difficulty levels

There are always four ladders, whatever the difficulty:

3 → 13 9 → 18 16 → 26 23 → 32

The difficulty sets how many snakes are on the board. More snakes make the finish harder to reach, and pay a higher multiplier when you do:

LevelSnakesFinish multiplierChance of reaching the finish from the start
Easy5×3.00about 32%
Medium9×6.89about 14%
Hard13×16.47about 5.8%
Expert18×41.06about 2.3%

After every roll, the squares where your next roll would hit a snake's head are outlined in red, and the top of the screen shows the chance of being caught on the next roll as n/6. It is information only and never changes the dice.

Where each square's multiplier comes from

Each square's multiplier is based on the chance of getting from that square all the way to the finish without being caught:

The closer a square is to the finish, and the harder it is to reach, the higher its multiplier

Squares close to the finish with few snakes ahead have higher multipliers, and the top of each ladder jumps up noticeably. The first few squares can be below 1 (square 1 on Medium is ×0.82), so collecting there gives back less than your stake.

Because of this design, neither collecting now nor rolling again is the better deal. When you stop only changes how bumpy a round feels. Stopping early is steadier, pushing for the finish swings more, and neither approach is better than the other.

Worked examples

Example 1: Medium, two ladders

You stake 1,000 coins on Medium (9 snakes).

Example 2: Easy, rolling past the finish

You stake 100 coins on Easy and stand on square 33 (×2.50). Only a 1 would land on the snake at square 34.

Example 3: early squares below 1

You stake 1,000 coins on Medium and your first roll is a 2, putting you on square 2 at ×0.91. Collecting now would give back only 910 coins, less than your stake, so most players keep rolling at least until they reach a ladder top or a square above ×1.

Common questions

Do I need an exact roll to finish?

No. In MacePlay, anything past 36 stops on the finish, and you never bounce back.

What happens on a snake's tail?

Nothing. Only the square with the snake's head catches you; the tail is just artwork.

Can I collect before rolling?

No. You need to roll at least once before you can collect.

Who decides the dice?

Every roll is generated by the server and prepared when the round opens; the screen just plays it out. When you tap Roll makes no difference to the result.

What if I leave in the middle of a round?

Leaving before you collect counts as a loss for that round, so collect first if you want to stop.
